Strength without the full weight
IMC has a thicker wall than EMT for mechanical protection outdoors and in exposed industrial runs, but a lighter wall than rigid metal conduit, so it is easier to handle and install for the same threaded system.
Threaded, like rigid conduit
IMC is threaded and takes the same threaded fittings as rigid conduit, so it fits a threaded conduit system where EMT set-screw fittings are not accepted.
